Cantonese and Mandarin Study in Hong Kong

  China
  • Hong Kong:
  • Hong Kong

Dates: Start dates twice a month, all year round.

Description: Our school is a leading language school in Hong Kong, specializing in Cantonese and Mandarin learning.

Located in the Wan Chai area of Hong Kong Island, the school is close to the Admiralty and offers a variety of restaurants, movie theaters and shopping centres.

Johnston Road and Queen's Road East are the two major streets in the area, but the streets and little alleys in between are by far the most intriguing. Export clothing shops line the streets of Johnston Road and Luard Road and are by far, some of the best values in Hong Kong. The nearest subway station is MTR station Exit A3.

The school is a modern building (3000 SQ feet) with 7 classrooms, a language laboratory equipped with audio and visual aids to facilitate language training.

The school also has a small cafe area; social area where students gather between breaks for refreshments and is close to all amenities.

The school has more than 50 Cantonese and Mandarin teachers who bring years of experience and all are native speakers, either born in Hong Kong or Guangdong in the cases of the Cantonese teachers.

Classes are small with a strict maximum of 7 to a class; average 5 to ensure that each student receives the maximum of individual attention.

Short Term Program: 3 Lessons daily (15 lessons per week). Programs are 2 weeks in length, 2 hours class time + 1 hour lab time daily.

Crash Program: 6 Lessons daily (30 lessons per week). Programs are 4 weeks in length, 4 hours class time + 2 hour lab time daily.

Intensive Program: 3 Lessons daily (15 lessons per week). Programs are 8 weeks in length, 2 hours class time + 1 hour lab time daily. Note: This course can be upgraded to super-intensive by adding an additional 3 more lessons daily, upgrading to 6 lessons daily.

When choosing the short term or intensive program, you can request lessons either in the morning or afternoon, when attending the supper intensive program, you will attend both sessions.

Our programs cater for all language levels from absolute beginners to the more advanced, include the use of course materials and provide a variety of options to enhance your program. Class size is maximum 7, the average is 5 students per class.

Each student will be expected to take a short placement test on the first Monday morning of the course (unless a complete beginner), to determine the students language level and ensure placement in the correct class.

Lessons are usually held in the mornings, starting 9:30am -12:20pm and 2:00pm - 4:50pm. Each program has class time and language lab time built into the program. Students are expect to do some homework and tests when required.

The text material is included in the program and is designed by the school, each language session is divided into 3 sub-sessions.

1st Sub-session is a teaching session, a native instructor who can speak fluent English will teach new words.
2nd Sub-session is a conversational session, a native instructor who can't speak English will drill what students have learnt in the previous session.
3rd Sub-session is to listen to the cassette tapes at the language lab, to ensure the accuracy in pronunciation. Each student takes a placement test upon arrival.

Host Family: (private room) 2 meals daily.

Living with a host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country.

All families are chosen after a careful selection procedure and are visited regularly by the school to ensure that high living standards are maintained. As many of our host families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, the trip to school, is usually not more than 10 to 25 minutes away.

Students have access to all living areas in the house and in most cases, will be expected to share the bathroom. All bed linens and pillows will be provided, however we suggest you bring your own towels. If your family does not provide a laundry service, they may allow you to use the laundry facilities for a small additional charge.

Highlights: Hong Kong, dominated by a jungle of spectacular skyscrapers and busy port, is a world capital of business and trade. The busy streets are filled with people and one of the best-known neighborhoods is actually floating on water. Aberdeen is home to thousands of junks and sampans (boats) used for both businesses and homes.

Tourists gather here to sample Hong Kong's famous cuisine on one of the many floating restaurants. Hong Kong Island really started to develop quickly about 150 years ago when Hong Kong became a British territory.

Kowloon was a village when the bustle of British imperial rule started spilling settlement across the water and onto this peninsula off mainland China. Kowloon is home to a popular space and science center, a cultural village and the harbor promenade.

Hong Kong is an exciting and unique city. With all the modern sophistication of the 20th Century, Hong Kong is enriched by the colorful traditions of the ancient Chinese Culture. It is the unique way in which these traditions coexist in this spectacular city that makes it such an interesting place for travellers to visit.
