Description:
The Hello World Experience Hello World Language Center's Program is for students who would like to comprehensively develop their English language skills while studying in an interactive language environment. Hello World Language Center's program consists of a variety of courses of study with 9 different language choices, from Grammar, Reading, and Writing, to Speaking and Listening, all framed in content-based topics such as "ESL & New York City Culture", "ESL & Music", and "ESL & Health and Healing". All classes in our ESL Program meet once a week for 2 3/4 hours. You can choose to study full time or part-time. You may also study in a semi-private or private tutorial which can be customized not only to your language level, but also to a schedule you create. Our full-time classroom environment consists of 18 credit hours per week, and Hello World Language Center, Inc. is authorized by the United States Federal Government to enroll non-immigrant students. We can issue Form I-20, which allows a student to apply for the F-1 Student Visa at a United States Consulate or Embassy in their home country. Naturally, one may transfer to our school from another school within the United States seamlessly. Through our comprehensive in-take process, students are placed at the appropriate level: Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced, all of which maintain class sizes with an average of 8-10 students, and no more than 12. You can also choose to study in a part-time capacity, taking as few or as many classes as you would like, so long as you do not wish to seek F-1 Visa Status. Finally, you may choose to study in a private tutorial. This means we will personally select a teacher to match your interest, and customize a program of study that meets your goals and fluency level. Cutting Edge Material All semesters at Hello World Language Center are eleven weeks long. Upon enrollment, you will be given an interactive textbook which we call a Portfolio, in which all your work, including materials for the class, student pieces a student creates, and evaluation tools from both the teacher and the student will be kept. Teachers will evaluate and assess the Portfolio on a monthly basis. Every month, teachers give performance feedback, so as to help a student understand their strengths and weaknesses while integrating it into their learning. Theses reports are designed to measure a student's progress in specific skill areas. A student will also receive a Final Evaluation Report that clearly defines the overall performance for the semester and provides recommendations regarding the appropriate skill focus and level for the following semesters at Hello World Language Center. A student is able to keep this Portfolio as their own customized textbook. One may also take them back to their home country to remind them of their study at Hello World Language Center, and to use it as a resource for continued learning. Top-Ranked Instructors Our instructors are native language speakers that have graduated from top=ranked universities, such as Cornell, Columbia, and Brown, and they have an interests in international education. Through a very competitive process, we only select the best and brightest, and many of our instructors have completed our TESOL/TFL Certification Program Hello World's Content-Based Instruction At Hello World, we use what is called Content-Based Instruction to bring relevant topics into the classroom. This means, for example, we have courses with interesting titles like "ESL & Art Appreciation", and "ESL & Poetry". Even in traditional classes like Grammar & Writing, we integrate topics of interest for you. By allowing students to learn English by learning in English, we make the process even more relevant and engaging. We do this by allowing the student, with the instructor, to make some of the decisions related to the content focus on the Final Project and the course. The Final Project is an alternative to a standardized test, used to evaluate your ability to learn the materials and language skills taught that semester. If you are interested in content areas beyond what we routinely offer, or if you have specific needs, you can always customize your own program through an Independent Study or a Private Tutorial. We divide our courses into three levels: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. We believe that too many "levels" give a false sense of security and impede a student's efforts. Since we keep the classes small, we can focus on the exact level and interests of each student and take advantage of our ideal student-teacher ratio.

Independent Study can be taken for 3, 6, or 9 credit hours. For every 3 credit hours of course credit, students will be expected to complete 4.5 hours per week of laboratory time of self-directed study, as well as one 15 minute session with their assigned instructor to supervise the student's study. The Student-Teacher Nexus, or relationship between the student and teacher, is especially important with a small group or private tutorial. Since it is imperative to provide a comfortable atmosphere to foster effective language learning, classes can be held in the comfort of either the student's home or business, or at the language center. All instructors are native speakers of the language they instruct, and often complete our TESOL/TFL Program. T.E.S.O.L. Certification Program in addition to the language programs we offer a world renowned T.E.S.O.L. (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and T.F.L. (Teaching Foreign Language) Teacher Certification Program. The Teacher Certification Program usually consists of four quarterly semesters normally completed in one year, and upon successful completion of the program, Hello World Language Center offers TESOL Certification. We are authorized under US Federal law to enroll non-immigrant students in this program. The Teacher certification Program is an excellent opportunity for teachers already certified and experienced in other areas of education to get concentrated training and certification in TESOL/TFL. It is also very helpful for people new to the field of education who would like to gain practical and theoretical training in language teaching. In addition, people in areas unrelated to teaching can use this program to augment expertise in their fields, so as to increase job opportunities and/or expand their scholarship to include an international perspective. The program gives a comprehensive overview of TESOL/TFL methodology from the traditional to the cutting-edge. This includes an overview of hello World Language Center's own alternative program. It also includes a treatment of various topics related to culture and international studies. In addition to this theory, students are given practical training in teaching a foreign language. By doing so, Hello world Language Center is able to offer a strong basis for TESOL/TFL expertise in an environment that encourages the TESOL/TFL student to be part of the ongoing dialogue between language and cultural learning. Hello World is known for integrating cultural awareness into the language learning process, and empowering both the teacher and the student in student-centered learning environments that creat a partnership between the student and teacher. In addition, each month TESOL/TFL students participate in a workshop format seminar in which these topics are discussed in further detail and students are able to take part in the discussion. Finally, at the end of the Certification Program, students are expected to prepare a paper on a topic related to the field and to present it to the class. The following are some fo the topics covered in the Teacher Certification Program: * An Introduction to TESOL and Hello World Theory * Nationalism, Language and Learning: Us vs. Them; ESL vs. Bilingual Education and Bilingualism * Practical tools for Teaching Language: The Planning Process * Language, Culture, and Business; Content-Based Instruction * Children and Young Adults and Language Learning: First vs. Second Language Acquisition * Trends in ESL Educational Theory; Inter-Language Pragmatics * ESL Methodology: Techniques in Language Teaching * English: Should It Be The Official U.S. Language: Language Variances and Dialects * Hello World's Bridge Building Approach and Other Ways to Teach Respect for Diversity * Hello World's Student-Teacher Nexus; Language Teaching and Student-Teacher Relationship.
