During the spring temperatures are moderate, flowers are blooming, and we get a few days of rain. Summers are usually hot and dry. During the winter it often snows. Fall temperatures are moderate and you enjoy watching the leaves change color. Wilbur and Orville Wright, owners of a bicycle shop on West Third Street, brought worldwide recognition to Dayton when they gave the world the wings to fly shortly after the turn of the century. Success came on December 17, 1903, when they flew the powered aircraft plane in a controlled flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. That success, originally viewed skeptically, was almost immediately credited as the world realized the significance of what had happened. The work of the Wrights was the start of a long record of aviation accomplishments which has earned Dayton the reputation as the "Birthplace of Aviation." The first parachute jump, first solo instrument landing, night flying advances, world altitude records, and pioneering in aerial photography have all been part of Dayton's heritage of progress in aviation. The museum of aircraft is a 5 minute drive from my house. My town house, located 20 minutes South of Dayton International Airport, is spacious and has modern amenities. The neighborhood is a good area for walking or jogging. Tennis and basketball courts are nearby. A golf course is a short drive away. The house comprises: living room, kitchen, dining room, laundry room equiped with a new washer and dryer. One bathroom is downstairs. Both bedrooms are upstairs. The student's room has a queen sized bed and a closet that is available for the student to use. There is also a television and DVD player in the students room. The second bathroom with a shower and bathtub is upstairs. The back yard is fenced and there is room for sitting out in the sun and cooking on a grill. The student will have access to a computer with internet service, a fax machine, a printer, and a digital camera. I live in walking distance of a store that has groceries and personal care items. A Greek, Chinese, and an Italian restaurant are a short walk away. My house is a short drive from shopping malls, specialty stores, restaurants, a university, and an event center. The event center hosts concerts, a circus, and sport events. There are many things to do in and around Dayton, Ohio. You can enjoy a movie at a theater, plays, cultural events, bike trails, and parks. Surrounding towns are know for specific events or attractions. Professional baseball, basketball, football, and hockey teams are in the area. Here is a brief description of the surrounding towns:- Vandalia: Directly north of downtown, discover Vandalia, home of the Dayton International Airport, site of the annual U.S. Air and Trade Show. The Trapshooting Hall of Fame and Museum makes its home in Vandalia, and the Grand American World Trapshooting Championship has occurred here annually since 1924. Oakwood: This fine historic neighborhood sits on a hill to the south of Dayton. It was once home to some of the area's most famous residents, including Orville and Katherine Wright, whose stately home still stands as a landmark in this grand neighborhood. Huber Heights: Shoppers will appreciate Huber Heights, located northeast of downtown, and its North Park Center, where they will discover Elder-Beerman and other stores. Huber Heights Shopping Center is another option. Centerville: Known as Dayton's "warm and cheerful" neighborhood, Centerville offers an array of activities. Take a walking tour of Historic Centerville and explore its most notable homes. Kettering: South of downtown lies Kettering, site of the 65-acre Carillon Historical Park, which encompasses more than 50 historical and educational exhibits. Such exhibits include a replica of The Wright Cycle Company, where, in 1903, the Wright Brothers built the world's first successful powered airplane. Miamisburg: Step back in time in Miamisburg's historic downtown. Visit Miamisburg Mound, where you can learn about the Adena Indians, who arrived there about 1000 B.C. Shopping is a breeze in nearby Dayton Mall, which is filled with more than 160 shops, restaurants and services. Englewood: Englewood, northwest of downtown, offers visitors two beautiful green retreats: Englewood Metro Park and Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm, both adorned by the Stillwater River.
