Uppsala International Summer Session was founded in 1963 and is Sweden's oldest international academic summer program. Some 220 people from all over the world come to Uppsala and the UISS every summer. Uppsala is Sweden's oldest university town. It's charming, lively and scholarly. The UISS is an intensive language program. Swedish is being taught 20-28 hours per week, at 6 levels, from complete beginners to very advanced. Teachers are highly qualified and especially trained in teaching Swedish as a foreign language. In addition several courses are organized with subjects relating to Swedish culture, history and society. Some are in Swedish, some in English. In the summer, courses will be organized from June 20 - August 13, 2010. The length of the courses is 4, 6 or 8 weeks. Every Friday, excursions take place to various places of interest. Different trips go to Stockholm with the Wasa Ship, Carl Milles Garden and the Old Town; Dalarna with a visit to the homes of Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn, two famous Swedish painters and famous places in the province around Uppsala. All students have access to the student nations, Swedish student clubs, where they meet Swedish students and sometimes they can dance there too. In the evenings different activities are offered. sports or if the weather permits we will have a BBQ. Swedish singers perform Films are shown on a regular basis. A very typical Swedish outdoor weekend is organized in Varmland. Building your own raft and float down the river, riding an icelandic horse, taking a long hike in the beautiful nature of Varmland, stay outdoors all night where it never gets dark. The long weekend to Helsinki is also very popular. A cruise on the ship from Stockholm to Helsinki is beautiful and fun, Helsinki is a totally different city from Stockholm. And then there is the thrill over being together with people from all over the world for a couple of weeks. Friendships that last a lifetime start in Uppsala. The international experience is something most people won't easily forget and is also a very enriching experience.
Highlights:
The experience itself, studying a summer abroad together with so many international people, friendships, learning a new language, being immersed in the language and the culture. It is a totally different study experience than you have/had at school/university. Meeting Swedish students at the different Uppsala student clubs.The optional weekends travelling within Sweden and/or to Finland. The potluck dinner, where everyone brings a taste of their national cuisine. The typical Swedish crayfish party, including the hats and bibs and the songs that go with it. The again typical Swedish Farewell Dinner, Swedish food and drinks, songs and sketches and a big after dinner party. All in all you'll go home tired, but happy and you'll have learned a lot in all sorts of ways.

Uppsala International Summer Session's Mission Statement: The UISS is a non-profit foundation, founded in 1963. We teach the Swedish language and courses connected to Swedish culture, history and society. We find the program also valuable in creating a good international atmosphere in which people get to know many others from many different countries, thus promoting international understanding as well.
