Arabic Study and Cultural Immersion in Fez, Morocco
Morocco
Term: Throughout the year
Dates: Start dates at least once a month, for the year.
Description:
Our school was established in 1983 and has since established itself as the pre-eminent institution in the Maghreb for the teaching of Arabic as a foreign language. The school is housed in a large Moorish-style villa surrounded by an oasis-like setting of date palms, olive trees and rosemary shrubs. The tranquil residential neighborhood is only a 5-minute walk from the city center (new city) and within easy walking distance of a variety of restaurants and cafes. The school boasts a specialized library focusing on Arab, North African and Islamic studies, offers various refreshments in the snack bar, including traditional Moroccan mint tea. Most students who study at our school come from North America and Western Europe. The school also offers the following facilities: snack bar, video, satellite TV facilities and a small Gym. Currently the school has no e-mail access but there are many Internet cafes near the school; the hourly rate varies from 50 cents to USD1 per hour. The school holds a maximum capacity of 150 students. The school also shares its classrooms and grounds with a large, well established English language school, thereby providing an ideal environment for interacting with young Moroccans.
Highlights:
The hospitable, historic city of Fez, known as Morocco's "Intellectual Capital", provides a unique ambiance for studying Arabic in North Africa. The most ravishing and mystical of Morocco's imperial cities, Fez was founded in 808 A.D. by the great Moroccan ruler saint Moulay Idris II. It is still considered Morocco's premier religious city by virtue of its great Islamic traditions. It is the site of Qarawiyyin Mosque (the largest mosque in North Africa) and Qarawiyyin Madrasah, and is also the burial place of Moulay Idris II. Its medina is the most complex, with more ancient monuments, more mosques, Koranic schools, inns and souks than any Moroccan city. The beauty of its woodcarvings, tiles and pottery remain unmatched.
