Description: The English Language Center (ELC) at Towson University offers a comprehensive language program for non-native English speakers who want to strengthen their English skills to pursue university study in the United States, or to improve their English for employment purposes. Students are enrolled in the core courses of Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, and Grammar in one of 4 levels of instruction, beginning through advanced. Students also select one course from a series of electives, and they work in the language resource laboratory. Full-time students receive 22 hours of instruction each week in small classes that are interactive, giving students many opportunities to speak, work in small groups, and apply their skills in real-life language learning settings.

To help students adjust to campus life, the ELC provides an Orientation Program the first few days of the semester. Students learn more about their academic program, meet their instructors, and tour the campus. ELC students have full use of all university facilities including the library, health center, computer labs, counseling center, and sports facilities. Campus dormitory living is also available to students who request it on their ELC application form.   

An American Conversation Partners Program gives students opportunities to meet regularly with American students for conversation. This popular program helps ELC student learn about American students, share their culture, and learn about life at Towson University.

Furthermore, social events that introduce students to the Towson campus and to the Baltimore area are an important part of the ELC program. A welcome party, a trip to Washington,D.C., and events related to American holidays are enjoyable ways for students to learn about American life and get to know one another. The Towson campus is in the heart of the community giving students easy access to theaters, restaurants, clubs, and shopping centers.
