EF International Language Schools and GVI Volunteer Project
Ecuador
Dates: Visit the GVI website for upcoming start dates.
Description:
Join this unique multi-part opportunity and spend 2 week in an EF Spanish language course at EF's Escuela Internacional de Espanol in Quito, Ecuador, and then travel up to the town of Otavalo and work as volunteer on GVI's community education project. This joint program is a collaboration between EF Education First and GVI. The 2 week EF language course consists of 3-5 hours a day of language lab work, group discussions, guest speakers, and special interest lessons to expand your vocabulary. Working on the GVI project, you will spend your time in one of Ecuador's poorest communities, teaching basic numeracy and literacy to children, practice your Spanish with the locals, and immerse yourself in the local Andean indigenous culture.
Highlights:
First two week volunteers will be in Quito, Ecuador's capital city and a great city to fully immerse yourself in the culture and practice your Spanish! EF school staff will organize group activities, from pickup soccer to a bike ride through Cotopaxi and salsa lessons, among others. For the following four weeks with GVI, volunteers will stay in Otavalo, a town nestled high in the Ecuadorian Andes, and only a few hours from Quito. This market town is famous for its handicraft market and indigenous Andean community. Volunteers work either within communities situated about a one hour minivan ride up from Otavalo up in the mountains, or a short bus ride and a half hour hike.
