Description: The high school follows the directives of the Ontario Ministry of Education and is entitled to grant diplomas identical to those received in the Province of Ontario. The high school is annually visited by the Ontario Ministry of Education & Training for a period of several days to certify that the high school is in compliance with the rules and regulations of the Ontario educational system.

The Educational System of Ontario
The Ministry of Education in Ontario Canada issues the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) to graduating students. The OSSD is recognized and accepted throughout the world. In order to obtain this, each student must earn 30 course credits, 18 compulsories and 12 electives. (One credit represents satisfactory completion of the learning expectations of a formal secondary course of study, requiring a minimum of 110 student-teacher contact hours.)

The academic program is structured so that a student can complete the diploma requirements in 6 years (Grade 7 to12). The school year is trimestered: Summer term (April / July); Fall term (September / December); Winter term (December / March). Student can obtain a maximum of three credits per semester. The student should experience courses covering a wide range of academic content.

As part of the diploma requirements, students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of voluntary community involvement activities. These activities may be completed at any time during their years in the secondary school program (Grade 9 to12).
The community involvement requirement is designed to encourage students to develop awareness and understanding of civic responsibility and of the role they can play in supporting and strengthening their communities.

CIS offers a wide range of career exploration activities to grade 7 to 12 students. The list of such activities that our school have offered to students in past years is as followed: field trips, volunteer activities, business courses, school assembly with a guest speaker, and individual employment consultation.

Each student in Grade 10 is assigned to a homeroom in which they will remain throughout their stay at this school. The homeroom teacher will be the faculty advisor for the students in his/her homeroom. The role of the advisor is to monitor the academic and social development of each student, meet with the student regularly for the purpose of reviewing his or her program development, identify and support opportunities for academic and social growth, and to maintain effective communication with parents on these matters. Parents will be encouraged to contact the advisor throughout the year.

Columbia Entrance Scholarship
A) A 50 % (210,000 yen) reduction of the Facility fee (420,000 yen) on entrance, to a maximum reduction of 900,000 yen from tuition fees (100,000 yen reduction per term for up to 9 terms) This entrance scholarship totals 1,110,000 yen.
Students are not eligible for the Honor Scholarship with this scholarship.

B) 10% to 50 % reduction of the Facility fee (420,000 yen) upon entrance. Students are also eligible for the Honor scholarship with this award.
Note: The students must maintain an average of 80 % in all 3 courses in every term after entrance. If the student cannot maintain this level, or becomes a long term absence, the scholarship will not be provided in the following term. However, if the student can attain the 80 % average again, the student may become eligible for this scholarship in the following term.

The eligibility may be revoked without notice for unacceptable behavior.

Requirements
* All students must have a recommendation from the principal of their last attended school
* Students from a Japanese elementary or junior high school must enter CIS in April right after graduation with marks average 4.0 (5 point scale) in the first and second term of their last school year.
Or
* Students from a foreign school must enter CIS in the term immediately after completion of grade 6 or grade 9 with GPA 3.0 in the last school year.

Acceptance
* A limited number of applicants will be selected.
Selection
* Applicants must take the CIS entrance examination within 6 months of their expected graduation
a) from a Japanese elementary or junior high school
b) from a grade 6 or grade 9 program in a foreign school.

Method of award
* Facility Fee The school will send an invoice for the entrance registration to all successful students with appropriate fee reduction.
* Tuition Fees The school will send an invoice for the entrance registration to all successful students with 100,000 yen reduction for the first term. In the second and subsequent terms, the 100,000 yen reduction will be provided (If tuition is already paid for the term, the school will reimburse 100,000 yen.)

Honor Scholarship
100,000 yen reduction in tuition for each term

Requirements
* Grade 7 to Grade 12 registered students at Columbia International School.
* Applicants must be of good character.
* Applicants must have an 80 % and average in all courses in the term.

Acceptance
* A limited number of applicants will be selected every term.
Selection
* Academic performance will be the first criterion; however, the school may consider other factors on a case by case basis.

Method of award
* The decision will be made at the completion of each term. The school will notify the successful applicant(s). If tuition payment for the term has already been made, the school will reimburse the amount of money to the applicant(s). If tuition payment for the term has not made, the school will send an invoice with deduction applied.
