Students have a variety of needs when it comes to the study of English. For some students, it is essential to work on English fundamentals, while for others, the focus is on academic English and the communication techniques that university study requires, such as essay and report writing, presentations, group discussions. Others need to polish their business English skills in order to jumpstart their professional careers in an international environment. We have programs to accommodate all of those needs. The ESL program at OIC consist of 5 modules at 7 weeks each. The schedule is from 9 AM - 4 PM (1 hour lunch break). Each level of ESL courses is compounded of intensive training and language acquisition in five areas of English proficiency: listening comprehension, vocabulary and reading ability, grammar and structure, writing skills and oral communication with a focus on improving the student's integrated English skills. ESL Levels : 1. Basic 2. Low Intermediate 3. Intermediate 4. High Intermediate 5. Advanced General English courses provide a comprehensive foundation in writing, conversation, pronunciation, reading and listening skills. Academic English courses are designed to take students to a whole new level of English proficiency to enable them to succeed in university courses developed for native English speakers. Business English courses target those students who plan to be involved in international business. The course embraces all aspects of business communication, from preparing common business documents to effective employment interviewing strategies. * Pathways to University Placements At OIC we offer our students two options of pathways to university placement depending on the academic background of our students when they are first admitted. Option One is tailored to those students who have already earned a Secondary School Diploma from their home country. Students who are intended for this option must earn a total of 7 university preparation course credits and must score more than 80% in every subject if they wish to seek successful placement in a prestigious university degree program. Option Two is designed for those students who have not earned any Secondary School qualifications from their home country or for students who would like to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Students who are enrolled in this option must satisfy the Ministry requirements of Ontario Secondary School Diploma. * Summer and Winter Camps OIC offers a two or four-week ESL Camp to international students in the Summer or Winter of each year with an objective to further cultural exchange, and to provide the international youth an opportunity to learn and understand the society of the Canadian people and to enable them to improve their English Language Proficiency while experiencing the North American Culture and visiting and enjoying the beautiful scenery, the cities and cultural diversity of Canada. The ESL Camp also serves to enhance the international perspectives of the prospective students, to enrich their study and life experience, and to lay a solid foundation for their pursuit of advanced studies in Canada in the future. * Work and Study Program Our Work and Study program is designed for people who come to Canada to study ESL English as a Second Language in Ontario International College.The Work and Study Program gives students multiple opportunities to link classroom learning to workplace experience. As a student participating in this program you can earn extra money and get valuable work experience during your studies. We offer the student a part time work opportunity and will assist the student in settling in, finding a job, accommodation, social networking and getting around Canada. The Academic component is composed of language acquisition, conflict resolution, cultural competence, problem solving, teamwork, handling criticism, adaptability, motivation, and leadership skills, industry specific terminology and practices. The Practicum component, or paid Internship, is monitored, has specific learning goals, is in combination with ongoing classes, and it is an essential and integral component of the program.
