Typical Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Dates: 8 - 16 weeks - adjustable
Description:
Teach a Man to Fish is currently seeking volunteers to assist in our latest Self-Sufficient School project in Southern Bolivia. This role will particularly appeal to volunteers who want to gain a fantastic on-the-ground experience of international development while immersed in a Spanish-speaking environment. This is also a great chance to build up your skills and CV while supporting an international development charity to make education available to some of the world's poorest children. This position is versatile, and involves various roles - helping the school manage and develop its rural businesses, contributing to teaching and sports coaching activities (optional). Ideally, you should have an interest in business, agriculture, teaching or sports as the project mainly revolves around these areas. An intermediate fluency in Spanish would be required, however - as none of the local residents speak English. If you are not confident of your language skills, there is an option to enroll in Spanish language classes in Santa Cruz before the project begins. The project start dates are not fixed, so that we can take our volunteers available periods into consideration. Even if you are interested and the 30th of June doesn't suit you, do get in touch and we can consider accommodating your start dates. The role is self-funded and lasts for 8 - 16 weeks. If you would like a different duration, please contact us to discuss.
Highlights:
The key areas where volunteers are needed include: - Social Enterprise. Each school business pays for the running costs of the school, acting as a social enterprise. The CEAA is an ideal place to volunteer for those interested in working in social enterprise, helping students to manage businesses and improve their profitability. - Education. Depending on your level of Spanish there may be opportunities to teach subjects such as English to students at the CEAA. Whilst this is not a core curriculum subject it would be of great use to the students and open up further opportunities for them in the future. - Sustainable Agriculture. The CEAA is the ideal place to learn more about the principles of sustainable agriculture and get involved with everyday running of school businesses! The school would benefit greatly from a helping hand, from looking after the tree nursery to milking cows. - Sports Education. Students have evenings set aside for sporting activities but the CEAA does not currently have a physical education teacher. It would be fantastic boost to the school to have organized team sports activities to help build teamwork skills and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle for the students. In reality the volunteering experience at the CEAA is likely to involve a combination of all the above, helping with more strategic tasks such as business planning and getting your hands dirty on the farm.
