* Beginning level-phonetic symbols, pronunciation and meaning of basic words, phrases, and sentences * Intermediate level-general lexicon pertaining to daily activities and fundamental literary works * Advanced level-Chinese history, stories and tales, traditions and customs Instructional materials are designed to suit language proficiency of individual students, ranging from basic conversation to readings in both vernacular and classical Chinese, with emphasis placed on creative writing to enable students to achieve all-around language proficiency. Instructional materials may be chosen by the student or recommended by the teacher to suit the student's special needs after evaluation of the student's language proficiency. The Center conducts classes on a one-to-one basis in order to provide the best possible opportunity to each student. In addition to the regular curriculum, the Center also offers optional courses to satisfy students' other interests. At present, there are the following courses: - Beginning-Chinese Grammar Usage - Intermediate-Chinese Grammar Usage - Chinese in Movies - Modern Drama - An Instruction to Taiwan's Society and native Culture - Taiwanese Language - Chinese Calligraphy Optional courses are taught by University professors and community professionals, while small-group conversation classes are led by experienced teachers from the Chinese Language Center. Graduates and upperclassmen of the Cheng Kung University College of Liberal Arts are employed to teach the one-on-one classes.
Highlights:
Before the beginning of each semester, the Center holds a tea party to allow teachers and students the opportunity to meet and get to know each other. Contests in Mandarin reading, speech, and story-telling, as well as visits to nearby historical sites, are also held at varying dates throughout the year. Finally, a farewell luncheon is held at the end of each semester for all students. Cheng Kung University is located in Tainan, which served as the capital of Taiwan from 1663 to 1885. The Chinese Language Center is located on the most beautiful section of the National Cheng Kung University campus, the Guang Fu Shiao Yuan (Guang Fu Xiao Yuan). This area is also home to the ancient Western Gate of the city, shady Banyan trees, and the Cheng Kung lake. Situated in the subtropics, Tainan is almost always sunny with temperatures ranging from about 35 Celsius in the summer to 10 Celsius in the winter.
